Julie Wilson Reviewed

reviewed by Alyssa Mason

At eighty four years old and still charming audiences, cabaret veteran Julie Wilson is as she says certainly ‘Not Dead Yet’.

Wilson sang a mixture of classics including Rodgers and Hart’s ‘The Lady is a Tramp’, Weill’s ‘Surabaya Johnny' and a song cut from Stephen Sondheim’s Follies ‘Can That Boy Fox-Trot’. Between songs she reminisced about her glory days in the nightclubs of New York, meeting Cole Porter, working with Peter Allen and even eating dinner expertly cooked by Billie Holiday.

Incredibly quick-witted and delightfully funny, Wilson has maintained her ability to sell a song despite her mostly spoken style of singing. It was intriguing to hear the songs retain their meaning and engage the audience even without strong vocal delivery.

Captivating and reflective, Julie Wilson brought the Golden Age of Broadway back to life with poignancy and pizzazz.
