Hayden Tee - Generation whY? Review.

Reviewed by Sophie Bruhn.

10th June, 7pm, Dunstan Playhouse

With a show name like Generation whY?,you know the show is not going to be a traditional cabaret show. Hayden Tee, an accomplished musical theatre performer with a pleasant tenor voice, keeps the audience entertained with a wide selection of songs from generation Y, sung in contrasting contexts and style.

Tee effortlessly blends the songs into affectionate tales of his family in New Zealand (such as the grandmother affectionately referred to as Optimus Prime) and his concerns for generation Y and the world.

All credit goes the musical director Nigel Ubrihien for his clever and fresh arrangements (the particular highlight being Baby Got Back sung in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan) and interjections. Background videos were projected onto a screen behind Tee, which ultimately proved pointless as it was very nearly impossible to tear your eyes away from him while he was performing.

In the end the only dull thing about the show is that Tee is only performing it once for the Cabaret Festival.
